5/31/2023 0 Comments A wild sheep chase meaningI'll admit that I sensed certain allusions - particularly to various wars, which is a key theme for Murakami - as having a resonance I couldn't quite grab hold of: lost in translation, or what have you. Perhaps there is more to this than I got, though. It's clear that Murakami hadn't grown into himself yet, but he was getting there, essentially laying the groundwork for the project of his overall bibliography. Honestly though, this didn't grab me until around the middle, and it was only the last 30 pages or so that made me think it's slightly above-average. Funny enough, as with many of his other books, the one flashback scene - a kind of short story in itself, a technique that would later be used to chilling, memorable effect in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - is one such instance. It's charming, seeing all the traits and techniques of his later work (1Q84, for instance, has a very similar plot to this one) at such an early age, but there are only flashes of what makes his work so compelling. So this pretty much establishes the blueprint of (most) every Murakami book to follow, just with a little less sophistication.
